A Letter about OZ
Exchanges - well worth reading! ... Hi Neill, We
have received 3 enquiries since June . We have had many contacts through
your website, not necessarily resulting in an exchange as we are happy to
provide travel and camping advice based on our experience. We have formed
many friendships during our travels, and particularly with a UK couple from
near Sheffield who visited family & friends in Australia during 2001 but
asked our advice about campervan purchase and their proposed 6 month trip to
OZ & NZ first. They have since returned in 2003/4 and will be coming out
again next year maybe for 12 months after their current exploration of the
US & Alaska.
Our very successful 3 month exchange in the UK in 2004 was from mid May to
mid August. This was a non simultaneous exchange as the UK couple used our
campervan from October 2003 to early January 2004 before taking up a similar
exchange in NZ.
To save time and back tracking, they flew into Darwin and did a camping tour
to Kakadu and then flew to Alice Springs for another camping trip to Ayers
Rock & environs before coming on to Melbourne, This cut down their
travelling time considerably. They then drove the Trakka over to Adelaide
and back and then to Cairns and return during the early wet season. The trip
to Cairns is not one which we would undertake in summer, but they did enjoy
many adventure activities in North Queensland in spite of the high heat &
humidity which they found very trying.
We find that common misconceptions from Brits are distance/time and the
range of weather patterns in Australia. Summer in Queensland is the tropical
wet season - hot i.e 30 deg C + all day and night with high humidity of
around 70% minimum. A friend of our who spent 10 years as a State Manager in
Queensland would not move out of his air-conditioned Brisbane office from
November until March.
Our winter (June to August) is the best time to visit anywhere north of
Sydney & that is when us southerners migrate looking for warm weather
(Maximum 24 deg to 30 deg C and cooler nights) Summer/Autumn (UK winter) is
excellent for Victoria, Tasmania, South Coast of NSW and parts of South
Australia. It can be very hot then (up to 40 deg. C in heat waves) but it is
dry with very low humidity.
This is a BIG country with many great attractions very long distances apart,
Melbourne to Brisbane is about 2000 km and from there to Cairns is another
2000 km.
It is possible to see a great deal of OZ in 3 to 6 months but most of the
trip will be spent behind the wheel!!
We know that generally it takes time and many emails and phone calls to
establish the necessary trust and all the formal arrangements covering
insurance and maintenance issues. Honesty and clear descriptions of the
intended holiday are essential, including whether the proposed exchange is
not suitable at any stage.
Any exchange of 3 months or more (Aussies get UK entry for 6 months without
a visa) will need about 6 to 9 months of prior notice and planning effort.
Thanks again for your motor caravanning site - it is a great resource.
Regards, Nev & Bev Greenway. |

Australia
offered Europe / UK wanted:
We are a retired couple from Croydon an outer
eastern suburb of Melbourne, Victoria with easy access to the wineries and
scenery of the renowned Yarra Valley, and the Dandenong Ranges.
We are
within a 2 hour drive of the Mornington Peninsula, Phillip Island and the
Victorian Snowfields. We are experienced motor caravanners, having toured UK
& Europe by car and motorhome or caravan on several occasions since 1977. We
have participated in a home exchange of 6 months and a motorhome exchange of
three months in the last 5 years, and are interested in opportunities to
further explore both the UK & Europe.
We
have a fully optioned Trakka “pop top” camper conversion on a Toyota HiAce
LWB van. It is a 2.4 litre petrol model with a 5 speed manual gear change,
power steering, cabin air-conditioning, and a AM/FM radio / cassette player.
Equipment includes a 110 litre 12v eutectic refrigerator, 90 litre water
tanks supporting a 12v pressure hot and cold water system to the S/S sink
mixer shower in the rear annexe, and a 2 burner gas stove with grill is next
to the sink but can also be used on a folding rear shelf. The living area is
powered by a 12v 80 amp hour deep cycle battery with solar panels, an
electronic battery management system, plus a
240V charger which is automatic
on hook-up to mains power (2 double power points). A chemical toilet is in
dedicated storage & is always accessable. Two forward facing rear seats and
the wide bench seat behind the cabin convert to a queen size double bed. We
also carry a 12v/240v 25 cm colour TV with a custom amplified antenna
system, a small marine SS kettle type BBQ, lounge camp chairs, and a Fiamma
pedestal for the table which all combine with the "safari room" side annexe
for outside use. The van is ideally
suited to the exploration of Australia's National Parks & our magnificent
coastal and inland recreation areas. We are interested in long term (up to 6
months) or shorter term (2 months) exchange, not necessarily simultaneously.
We would consider the inclusion our home and car in any exchange.

New Zealand - UK
exchange campervan. We are coming to the UK June-July 2006 for 6
weeks. We would like to organise an exchange for a similar size campervan as
one of ours. We operate a small campervan rental company in NZ and run 2 & 3
berth Toyota and Mazda Hi Tops. Can offer one with shower and toilet. Ours
are fully equipped (factory conversions) with stove, sink & pump, fridge,
cooking and eating equipment, chairs, bedding, maps, and towels. We can
offer free airport pick up from Christchurch or Auckland and 24 hour
roadside assistance. We believe the usual terms are owner pays for repairs,
which is standard for us anyway. Insurance is included in our standard terms
and would expect the same in the UK? NZ is a beautiful country to visit if
anyone is thinking of coming and worrying about the cost of a vehicle,
here's the answer. We do a swap. Our website to view our campers is

Australia (Sydney)
- UK: My wife and I are travelling to UK
this summer and are hoping to exchange our car/caravan combination for a
motorhome holiday. We live on the shores of Lake Macquarie, about 100kls
north of Sydney, and ideally situated for a touring holiday of Australia.
The Hunter Region is renowned for it's beaches, vineyards and the beautiful
lakes and mountains. Our car is a Ford ( Granada) 6cyl, 4litre engine
factory fitted with a conversion to use either petrol or LPG. LPG, of
course, is very cheap at 40 to 50cents per litre and I usually get 4.5 kls
to the liter. Yes - it is really cheap isn't it? The caravan is 5 years old
but as new and the car is in perfect condition and 5 years old. Margery and
I are baby boomers and still VERY young, non smokers, semi retired and born
in the UK and migrated as 10 pound pommes in 1963 as newlyweds. We will
arrive in the UK on 17.7 2005 and realize we are very late in making these
contacts. We had never heard of exchanges until 2 weeks ago! It would be
ideal to exchange for our full holiday until October but we are very open to
offers. To try and arrange an exchange simultaneously . I can only imagine,
is very difficult, but I am doubtful whether that is advantageous anyway. We
think it would be nice to have a few days with whoever comes to Australia
here in our home before they chuff off on their round Australia jaunt.
Certainly we are going to know people very well before they borrow our
car/caravan. It is the love of Margery's life! We have plenty of
accommodation at home and regularly host international visitors in our homes
as a part of our membership in Friendship Force International. Look it up on
the web. Both Margery and have family in the UK and will be spending some
time visiting them in Yorkshire before travelling around the UK. We may get
to France and Spain because we have family recently moved over there to
retire that we would very much like to catch up with.

exchange(s) would not necessarily have to be simultaneous, as we are very
flexible. We would like to visit Aus & NZ (consecutively if possible)
between Oct 2003-March 2004. In exchange, we can offer our 20' long 4 berth
Swift Sundance 600s that was new in April 2002. It is equipped with many
extras and every comfort needed for an extended holiday including satellite
TV and a shower. We ourselves undertook a 4 month European tour in it last
year. Click on this link to see the vehicle type:-

Australia / UK:
My Husband and I will be travelling in England
in Sept/Oct 2002 and hoped to hire from someone a hightop van. I was hoping
that perhaps one of your members might like the idea of earning a few pounds
or exchanging the hire for accommodation in a beautiful guest room in our
new house in Australia. This is what I was thinking of for the ad: Wanting
to hire a hightop van for 2 weeks in Set/Oct 2002. Travelling Sth England.
Can provide copious proof of good character and capacity to pay. Email for
more details on time and payment options. Will swap van hire for
accommodating you in our guest room, (own bathroom), in our new country home
in Brisbane, Australia. Mrs P Barber

Africa Offered - UK wanted: We own a
very comfortable, new-ish, 6 berth motorhome and would like to get in touch
with owners of a similar unit in the UK with the intention of arranging an
exchange for holiday purposes. We live in a very scenic part of our country
which is a very popular tourist destination, close to the Kruger National
Park and other attractions. With the current exchange rate our currency is
now so cheap that you people can have a wonderful holiday here cheaper that
what it will cost you to stay at home! My
wife & I are on the wrong side of 50 and we have 2 teenage daughters and
married son with 2 grandchildren. My passions are flying (fixed wing,
gliders, helicopters) and photography ( associate of Photographic Society of
South Africa - colour prints). My wife Wilma enjoys gardening & photography
and she hates flying through storms and being chased by wild elephants.
Business: My main business is bulk earthmoving, aerial photography, aerial
game capture and flying for the police airwing.
Our Pacer motorhome: It is a six berth with 3
double beds. It has a four burner gas stove and oven, large fridge (gas, 12
volt or mains) and ample storage and hanging space. There is a very
efficient hot & cold water system and the geyser works with mains power or
gas. There is a flush toilet and shower. The unit has a large fresh water
tank and uses a grey and a black tank for disposal. It has all the necessary
folding chairs, outside barbeque etc. There is also a roll-out awning and
the motorhome is fully fitted with mosquito gauze. It is built on a Nissan
chassis and the power is a 3 litre Nissan V6 (petrol) with loads of torque.
It cruises easily at 75 miles per hour. The driving cab has an air
conditioner. If we can do an exchange
with people of like interests it may be a deal made in heaven. Contact: D C

SOUTH AFRICA (CAPE
TOWN)-EXCHANGE WANTED IN UK: We plan
to visit the UK in April/May 2002 and would like to arrange a motorhome swop
for a period of three weeks. Our
motorhome is an Explorer Cub Deluxe on a Toyota chassis and is 17 ft long
and easy to drive. The layout is standard with a rear dinette/double bed,
toilet & shower compartment, plus overcab double bed in Luton. It is fitted
to a high standard. Extras include cab aircon & awning. While there are two
double beds, this motorhome is really only comfortable for two adults .We
would prefer to do this swop with non smokers. We are very flexible with
respect to timing in SA and type of motorhome . Contact us and lets see if
we can work something out. We have been caravanners for nearly 20 years and
still own our original caravan purchased in 1983. The motorhome allows us to
have short one night fishing breaks as well as relaxed game viewing at our
national parks. We have been reading various web pages but if anyone out
there has experience of this kind of swop we would love to hear from you.
